Uniting space miracle
School in timber modular construction, Cologne
The city of Cologne, like many other major German cities, is confronted with an acute shortage of school space. The means of choice is modular prefabricated construction. Sehw is currently responsible for the planning of eight construction projects at different locations.
In Kopernikusstraße in Cologne-Kalk, a compact two-storey building with a flat pitched roof unites two existing buildings from the 1950s. The new building is clad with horizontal timber battens. The links to the existing buildings are designed as differentiated transitions and also form the entrances to the buildings. The ground floor houses a canteen that can also be used as an assembly hall. The upper floor houses a learning cluster with classrooms and an open forum for a variety of working and learning situations.
