Space for new synergies
Secondary school building in Hackenbroich
Together with Kleusberg, we have developed a concept for the Hackenbroich School Centre that creates a distinctive new building, characterised by its striking timber façade and a seamless integration with the outdoor space. The three-winged building, with its spacious forecourt, establishes a clear presence on Dr.-Geldmacher-Straße, whilst the western wing frames the sheltered playground and integrates the building’s scale into its surroundings. The interior is characterised by a skylight-lit foyer. As a central meeting point, it connects all functional areas via short routes and, together with the adjoining canteen, creates a flexible link to the neighbouring grammar school. The educational structure follows the principle of modern learning clusters, in which classrooms and specialised rooms are grouped around open learning zones, thus enabling a diverse range of learning opportunities.
The outdoor space functions as an extended classroom: grassy terraces bordered by seating walls and a spacious activity area invite active recreation. A deep roof overhang provides shelter from the weather, whilst extensively greened roof surfaces sustainably improve the microclimate.
Structurally, the project relies on an ecological modular construction with a regional timber façade.
The vertical slats lend the building a warm, inviting feel and a sense of visual depth. The design represents a contribution to forward-thinking educational architecture that combines environmental responsibility with a high quality of the built environment.
