Playful learning in old barracks

The design concept for the York municipal primary school makes it possible to create an attractive and contemporary ensemble of primary school and sports hall as part of the urban masterplan, which fits carefully but confidently into the exposed location and reoccupies the site of the former staff building. With its individual façade design based on the existing historical building and a strict grid structure, the design has its own identity and distinctiveness within the new neighbourhood. Together with the open and varied design of the learning and communal areas, the result is a school that is available to the children, the teaching and care staff and the neighbourhood as a whole as a home and versatile venue.
