School, all spruced up
New construction of the Forchheimer Straße primary school, Nuremberg
In recent years, Nuremberg has launched an unrivalled school offensive. Part of this is a new primary school in the rapidly developing north-west of the city. The design for the new primary school on Forchheimer Strasse consists of two staggered buildings in the southern part of the site. The staggered shape of the buildings breaks up the building mass into a smaller-scale structure that adapts to the scale of the surrounding buildings in terms of urban development and is further emphasised by the three to four storeys. This creates a varied interplay of building projections and recesses, particularly on the street and schoolyard side, which simultaneously divide the outdoor space into different zones and ensure good lighting of the interior spaces. The interior is accessed via an open central staircase, from which four clusters per floor are accessed. Learning studios, which are completely clad in wood, are located around two inner courtyards and deliberately set themselves apart from the other classrooms. The wood material is echoed in the high-quality façade with thick mineral plaster in the windows and closed panels.
