School extension buildings in modular timber construction, Cologne
Sehw is currently planning eight additional buildings for several school locations in cooperation with SH Holz- und Modulbau for Gebäudewirtschaft Köln. The City of Cologne reacted early to the lack of space and concluded framework agreements with consortia of contractors and planners as part of a tendering process in order to rectify these deficits quickly, economically and with high quality using serial and modular construction methods.
As part of this collaboration, a two-storey modular timber structure is being built on the Petersen-Straße school centre campus, which responds to the usage requirements and the location with a U-shape. The courtyard becomes part of the building's programme as a place of learning. The shell of the building consists of a light-coloured panel material, the division of which reflects the modular construction method. The transparency and openness of the entrance hall, with its combined flight of steps and seating, facilitate communication and provide orientation. Meeting and informal learning spaces between the classrooms on the upper floor create a variety of working and learning atmospheres.
