Learning in the Neighbourhood

Sonnengrundschule, Oranienburg

The new Sonnengrundschule forms the spatial transition between the new residential neighbourhood to the east and the existing educational buildings to the south. Through its appropriate scale, articulated form and varied heights, the building blends naturally into the diverse surroundings and provides an urban boundary to the green corridor to the west. A clearly defined recess in the building marks the entrance to the school and opens onto a forecourt with a pleasant atmosphere, which also serves as a neighbourhood square. Courtyards are created between the building wings, linking the school building with the residential development to the east and the school playground and sports areas to the west. On the ground floor, a sequence of transparent communal spaces forms the heart of the school. The foyer, assembly hall, canteen and all-day learning areas are closely interconnected and can be used flexibly. The sports hall is situated on the forecourt and can be accessed separately, independent of school operations. The year-group clusters on the upper floors are clearly arranged around the central stairwell.

The classrooms and after-school care rooms are organised into clearly structured zones. Learning islands, differentiated learning spaces and quiet zones allow for a wide range of educational uses. Loggias and external staircases create a direct connection to the outdoor spaces and provide shade. The new building is designed as a modular timber structure. Timber defines both the structural framework and the building’s appearance, enabling a flexible, sustainable construction method. Green roofs and photovoltaic systems complement the ecological concept. The outdoor facilities reflect the school’s internal structure and offer a variety of spaces for play, exercise and socialising. Climate-appropriate vegetation and retention areas support sustainable rainwater management. The result is a future-proof primary school that spatially connects learning, community and the local neighbourhood.
