Town Country Creek
Renovation and extension of a historic building, Altötting
The town of Altötting lies in the heart of Bavaria. The historic town centre is the spiritual centre of Bavaria and has been the most important Marian pilgrimage site in the German-speaking world for over 500 years. In the centre of Altötting, Sehw Architektur has realised the ‘Stadt Land Bach’ (Town Country Creek) project with 14 special condominiums. The building occupies a prominent corner not far from the main square with a massive cubature with an austere perforated façade and steep roof. This simultaneously references the regional architecture and creates a clearly modern building with its own character. The history of the building goes back several centuries. Over time, the former department stores' was converted into a medical centre which, after years of vacancy, now offers space for 2 to 4-room flats, providing central and exclusive living for young and old. The building extension was realised in solid timber construction with a façade made of textured high-grade plaster.
“the surrounding churches and monasteries are staged through the windows like pictures on the wall”
All the flats in the house are individual and have their very own charm thanks to the customised floor plans and the incorporation of the surroundings. The ground-floor gardens above the Mörnbach, the private loggias on the upper floors offer views of a green patio as well as views of the surrounding churches and monasteries, staged like pictures on the wall. The two upper floors are occupied by maisonette flats with magnificent views of the city and the Alpine foothills. The project was honoured with the BUILD Architecture Award 2017 in the “Best Bavarian Condominium Design” category.
