A Campus Thinks Ahead
Master Plan for the Munich International School
The Munich International School is growing—from 1,300 to 1,500 students at its Starnberg campus. What may sound like mere numbers is, in reality, an urban planning question: How can a campus that has grown rather haphazardly over decades continue to evolve, thereby sharpening its character as an inspiring place of learning for the next generation of children and young people aged three to 18? Our master plan answers this question with a holistic approach. The focus is not on individual new buildings, but on the coherent further development of the entire site—with clear circulation patterns, reorganized functions, harmonious infill development, and a central gathering place: the “new heart” of the campus, enhanced by an amphitheater, redesigned outdoor spaces, and a cafeteria that opens toward the center of the campus.
The planned new building, a prefabricated timber-frame structure featuring large glass surfaces and a wraparound balcony with views of Lake Starnberg and the Alps, offers child-friendly spaces on the ground floor for early childhood education based on the Reggio approach, and flexible cluster rooms on the upper floors for ninth-grade students, as well as optional STEM labs for the upper school. In the best sense of the term, it is a learning environment brimming with possibilities. A participatory process during Phase 0 involving students, teachers, parents, and school administrators laid the foundation for the space allocation plan—and ensured that the building not only functions effectively but also becomes an integral part of the school community.
The result is not just an addition. It is the future.
