Space for development

Meisenburg School, Essen

The two-story extension to Meisenburg School in the Bredeney district in the south of Essen complements the school building from the 1950s and blends naturally into the existing ensemble. The L-shaped new building occupies the northeastern part of the property, connects to the break hall, and, together with the south-facing playground, forms a sheltered recreation area for the students. The clear exterior form is continued inside. Two barrier-free floors make it easy to find your way around. A spacious cluster and learning area opens up at the main entrance, serving as an access point, meeting place, and communication space. Adjacent classrooms can be flexibly connected to expand the space for joint learning or events.

The organization follows the cluster principle: classrooms are grouped around open learning zones and differentiation rooms, which create visual connections through partially glazed walls and support a variety of learning formats. Generous, floor-to-ceiling windows ensure bright rooms and strong connections between the interior and exterior spaces. The new building is designed as a modular construction with a curtain-type, rear-ventilated facade made of fiber cement panels. Prefabrication enables economical and sustainable construction. Inside, natural materials, robust surfaces, and targeted acoustic optimization create a pleasant learning atmosphere with a high level of user comfort. The result is a contemporary learning environment that respectfully complements the existing building and spatially supports new educational concepts.
