South on the Hennekamp

Innovative quarter, Düsseldorf

A diverse, green urban quarter is being created on the former industrial site in the centre of Düsseldorf. In terms of urban planning, the quarter at the Auf'm Hennekamp - Witzelstraße junction responds with a striking high point for orientation, a noise barrier to the busy street and small-scale development in the inner area as a mediation to the neighbouring buildings. A green corridor leads into the development, complemented by commercial units on the ground floor. The tower construction with maximum verticality minimises the building footprint and creates space for green areas: neighbourhood plazas, pocket parks, playgrounds, areas for urban gardening and sport. Even if no existing buildings could be preserved due to the soil contamination, urban mining contributes to sustainability by partially reusing existing demolition material and minimising soil sealing. The mix of uses leads to a diverse mix in the neighbourhood.
