Green Centre Oedekoven
Secondary school, Alfter
The winning design for the extension of the grammar school in Alfter sets standards in sustainable school architecture. Two interconnected buildings form a new, identity-creating campus square – which characterises the location and creates a central, communicative centre. The jury particularly praised the compact design, which preserves valuable open spaces and minimises the impact on the existing trees.
A spacious foyer leads to the flexible arena and communal areas. Two light-flooded atriums ensure optimal orientation and an open, inviting atmosphere. The arena is a standalone meeting place that can be used flexibly for school and external events. The classrooms on the upper floors are open and adaptable – perfect for modern educational concepts.
A key element of the design is the modular timber construction, which not only ensures high architectural quality but also sustainable and economical implementation. The prefabricated timber modules enable a shorter construction time, reduce costs and guarantee high precision in production. At the same time, timber, as a natural, renewable building material, actively contributes to CO₂ reduction and a healthy indoor climate. The sustainability strategy is complemented by photovoltaic systems on the green roofs. A well-thought-out ventilation strategy with heat recovery and an intelligent daylight and shading concept ensure energy-efficient building use. The award-winning design combines innovative architecture with environmentally conscious construction and forward-looking pedagogy. The campus will be the green centre of the Oedekoven district, with paths connecting the campus to the neighbourhood.
